As Senior Vice President of Acciona Solar Power since 2005, Mr. Cohen is the chief technology officer responsible or the engineering, operations, research, development and dissemination of solar thermal energy technologies for the company’s solar energy projects.
Mr. Cohen has over 30 years of experience in the field of solar energy. He previously served as the vice president of engineering and operations for Acciona Solar Power (formerly Solargenix Energy) beginning in 1998. Mr. Cohen as instrumental in the development of the Nevada Solar One project, the largest solar thermal electric power plant to be built in the last 17 years, and the third largest plant of its kind in the world. Mr. Cohen was the chief engineer esponsible for the development of the solar technologies being used at Nevada Solar One today.
In 2002, Mr. Cohen was recognized as a solar industry leader when he received the prestigious “Hoyt Clarke Hottel Award” from the American Solar Energy Society. This award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of solar energy.
Prior to joining Acciona, Mr. Cohen held the position of technical services manager of KJC Operating Company, the operator of the most successful Solar Electric Generating Systems (SEGS) in California. His service at the SEGS spanned more than 14 years, starting with LUZ International as plant engineer in charge of the performance improvement of nine SEGS plants, with a total capacity of 355 MW. Mr. Cohen’s career in solar energy began as a staff engineer at the Scientific Research Foundation where he was involved in various research and development activities including selective surfaces, solar ponds and molten salt storage.
Mr. Cohen holds his associates degree in Design & Construction of Machinery and a bachelor’s degree in
Electro-mechanical Engineering from the Academie de Nice, France. He also has completed coursework in
Optics from the University of Nice. Mr. Cohen has authored and co-authored approximately 50 papers related to concentrated solar power.
