As Chairman and CEO of ACCIONA SA, José Manuel Entrecanales has transformed the organization from a construction company to a global infrastructure and energy company, with an emphasis on renewables and sustainable development. After 13 years of impressive growth, ACCIONA, with a market capitalization of US $16 billion, is traded on the Madrid Stock Exchange (IBEX-35), and is recognized as a world leader in infrastructure projects, renewable energy, housing, water and environmental solutions.
Mr. Entrecanales began his professional career in 1985, working as an associate in Capital Markets at Merrill Lynch in New York and London. Mr. Entrecanales began his career at Acciona in 1990, then Entrecanales y Tavora SA, as Director of Corporate Development. The company, which has a global reach covering more than 30 countries in all five continents, was founded in 1931 by Mr. Entrecanales’ grandfather, José Entrecanales. In 2004, Mr. Entrecanales succeeded his father, José Maria Entrecanales, as Chairman of Acciona .
With José Manuel Entrecanales at the helm, Acciona has committed reducing the world’s CO2 emissions by 220 million tons in the next 23 years. That is one percent of the 18.4 billion tons needed from the world’s power production industry by the 2030 deadline set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. As a result of the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, Acciona was the first company in the IBEX-35 index to become a member of the World Business Council on Sustainable Development, as well as the World Pact of the United Nations.
Chairman Entrecanales’ personal dedication to increasing Acciona ’s corporate investment in sustainable development and renewable energy led to the successful takeover of ENDESA, the leading electricity supply company in Spain and Latin America, with more than 22 million customers in 14 countries. Since October 2007, Mr. Entrecanales has also served as Executive Chairman of ENDESA.
Previously, Mr. Entrecanales was a founding partner of Airtel Móvil (now Vodafone Espaňa S.A.) the Spanish operator of the leading British multi-national telecommunications group, Vodafone. He also led the organization’s Foundation, which deployed communications technology in support of disadvantaged groups. In 2007, Mr. Entrecanales resigned from the position as Chairman so he could focus his time and efforts on Acciona and endesa .
Mr. Entrecanales has a degree in Economics from Complutense University of Madrid. He is married and has four children.
